Emachines entered the market as a producer of cheap desktop computers. The original Emachines were the cheapest desktop computers available. Originally, the introduction was greeted with a big ho-hum. They looked cheap and were cheaply made, hence the sobriquet cheap desktop computers. When I was selling Gateway computers, our technicians discovered components that were glued to motherboards. These would not withstand a great deal of heat. They also had a high out of box failure rate.

Emachines was acquired by Gateway (Or they merged, depends on who you ask.) several years ago. Their reputation still lags behind that of HP and Dell but they show signs of improvement.
