Adding Memory To your PC
If your desktop computer is showing its age, or if it was just about the cheapest desktop computer you could find, you might find it well worth your time and a few bucks to add some additional memory to the system.
One of my favorite adages has been "Adding memory is the cheapest way to speed up a computer." That was true years ago and still holds true. If you hear a lot of clicking while using your PC, what you are likely hearing is your hard drive being accessed. A computer is like your dog, it is faithful and loyal to you. It will attempt to complete any task you ask of it. If it doesn't have enough memory to hold all of the data it needs, it will move it in and out from the hard drive to memory and back to accomplish the given task. If it has enough memory, then it will perform the job much quicker.
When you remove the cover to your PC, memory will be the small black modules plugged into the motherboard. There usually 4 slots on a motherboarde, and memory must be installed in pairs. You simply move the clips back that are on either end of the slots. You place the memory stick in at an angle and rock it upright. Take careful note, there is a notch on the contact portion of the stick and you must line this notch with the small raised part of the socket. When I was managing Computer City's repair center in Houston, we charged $27 to install memory and it was a 5 minute job. No configuration changes necessary, just power off, remove the cover, make sure you are grounded with a wrist strap and plug it in.
Give it a go. You won't be sorry and your old cheap desktop computer will be rejuvenated. Or you could opt to spend a good bit more money on one of the desktop computer deals we offer here.
If you don't know the type you need, there is a very good utility called Belarc Advisor It is free and will tell you a lot about your computer, including how much memory and the type. Here is a link to download: Belarc Advisor. Don't worry about it being safe, it is a very popular and safe downoad. I have used it for years.
