IdeaCentre A600:Lenovo’s Premium All-In-One Desktop Computer

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Thursday 28 May 2009 5:53 pm

The IdeaCentre A600 is taking its place as Lenovo's premium all-in-one desktop computer. Some of its highlights include a 21.5-inch full-HD monitor, multifunctional remote controller, and a nifty wireless keyboard with touchpad. This is an effort on Lenovo's part to blur the line between your PC and TV. The IdeaCentre sports
an impressive combination of features and performance and comes with a price tag to match.

All-in-one Design

There is no separate cabinet, and the IdeaCentre A600's centrepiece is its slim screen. This screen is special. It is a glossy, 21.5-inch wide and has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. This is part of Lenovo's effort to blur the PC-TV difference. The resolution makes it perfect for high-definition movie playback. On either side of the curved bezel there is a combination of connectivity ports and an optical drive, and touch-sensitive settings button on the front. Like any other monitor, you can adjust the IdeaCentre A600's angle by tilting it forward and back. The screen curves inwards below the bezel and is secured firmly to a stand. This extended curved bezel also houses the onboard speakers, along with a sub-woofer located on the back panel.

Features and Specificationss

The Lenovo A600 is powered by the Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 2-GHz processor, with 2GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 640GB (7200rpm) hard drive. There is also a built in TV tuner and has a socket placed on the back panel to plug in your cable TV connection. The graphics card is a Radeon HD3650. Also equipped with Dolby Home Theater surround sound and Windows Media Center combine to make the Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 a very good candidate for a home theater system. Other extra accompaniments: 4-in-1 remote controller, wireless mouse and keyboard (with a touchpad).

Unfortunately, The IdeaCentre A600 doesn't include an HDMI port, but all other input-output ports are well represented: 6 USB ports, Firewire, multicard reader, Gigabit Ethernet, Wireless 802.11n, DVD writer, headphone and microphone ports all show up on the connectivity front. There is an option to include a Blu-ray ROM drive to further enhance its high-definition playback potential.

Usability and Performance

The Lenovo IdeaCentre A600's keyboard appears to be slim-and-light and very well built. The inclusion of a touchpad and mouse buttons are very convenient as you might expect, allowing you to control it from a range of 25 feet. The wireless keyboard is a major plus, and the 4-in-1 remote controller just sweetens the [pt. It acts as an air mouse for controlling the PC. Just point the remote at the screen and move it left or right to simulate the mouse-pointer movement on the screen. You can also use it as a phone with VOIP services like Skype, and play bundled games just like on a Nintendo Wii. You will be asking yourself "Is there anything this desktop computer doesn't do?" You can serve for real while playing tennis, stoop and bowl while bowling, and more. With 3D motion detection via the remote, it becomes very addictive. Whether you are watching movies, or playing games - the A600 can do it all.

It comes with Lenovo's proprietary VeriFace face-recognition technology and a OneKey backup solution. It has a respectable WorldBench score of 87, and 3D Mark 06 score of 3086, it scores well on any benchmarks you care to throw its way.

My Conclusions

:

The Lenovo IdeaCentre A600 is an excellent effort to create a combination of a television set with a PC, and I would highly recommendit to anyone interested in enjoying the best of both worlds. When you consider the added bonus of Wii-like gaming with the wonder remote, it is a unique product, in a class of its own. It thoroughly justifies its premium price tag of $1,473. It is not a cheap desktop computer but with all it can do, it is a very good desktop computer deal.

Apple Users! This One’s For You

Posted by | Software | Wednesday 27 May 2009 10:13 pm

Browsing around, I find there is a new version of LaunchBar. A new version of LaunchBar calls for a celebration. So now that LaunchBar 5 is available, lets get out the bubbly.

LaunchBar has been one of my all-time favorite Mac OS X applications for many years. LaunchBar gives you instant access to everything on your hard drive that’s of any importantance: applications, documents, contacts, bookmarks, songs, anything else you have stashed there. Press a hot key and type a few letters. In seconds, LaunchBar finds everything on your hard drive (or drives) that matches.

It’s very similar to OS X’s Spotlight feature, only it is smarter. It learns your preferences. For example, if you type “f-i-n” and select Final Cut Pro from the LaunchBar list a couple of times, LaunchBar assumes that you are looking for Final Cut Pro when you type “f-i-n” and moves Final Cut Pro to the top of the list. Now just press Return or Enter to launch it or press the Spacebar or right-arrow key to see a list of recent Final Cut Pro projects. The application on the hard drive is named “Final Cut Pro,” but LaunchBar knows that when I type “f-i-n,” I’m looking for Final Cut Pro. And it works just as well for other data, including documents, folders, contacts, songs and much more.
Great new features in LaunchBar 5 include:

• • Mac OS X Quick Look: After LaunchBar finds a file, you can press the Spacebar or Command + Y to preview the item.

• • Create new events and to-do items for iCal support with LaunchBar.

• • Clipboard History: Preserves data from recent Copy operations so you can use the copied data again later.

• • ClipMerge: Combine multiple Copy operations into a single Clipboard item so all of the items you copied can be pasted at once. I just love this feature to death.

This has been a tool on my systems since v4 of LaunchBar.
Don’t just take my word for it. Download LaunchBar 5 and take advantage of the free 30-day trial. If you are like me, you will buy it when the 30 day trial is over. You can download it here:

Junkware: Where It came From and What You Can Do About It

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Wednesday 27 May 2009 8:44 pm

Okay...you got a really good desktop computer desktop computer deal. You took it home, unpacked it, ran the usual rat's nest of cables, plugged it into a good surge protector and turned it on. Pretty soon (A bit longer than you would have liked.) icons started popping up. You have just booted it up for the first time and you have 10 or 15 icons staring you in the face. This is a brand new desktop computer. What's with that? That my friend, is junkware or shovelware as we used to call it. It is a bunch of "try it, you might like it and buy it" software. Most of it is only good for 30 days and it just sits there. I don't like it and you probably don't either. The manufacturers make a boatload of money from the software vendors for loading it on every new PC they sell. They are not about to stop. You have a couple of options: Using the Windows CD that came with it, you could wipe the hard disk clean and reload Windows, you can live with it, or you can clean it out manually. I usually opt for cleaning it out manually.

Before you start the cleaning process, make note of the different icons. If you don't know what they are or what they do, then search using Google and determine whether you want to keep them or not. Those you want to get rid of, Click Start, Control Panel and then Add Remove software. This is the safest and easiest way to get rid of them.

If you are feeling adventurous, Click Start, Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK. On the popup window, click Startup. This will bring up a list of items. Those with an X in the little box will start anytime you boot your system. You don't need 95% of them and they just hog your resources and slow your new desktop computer. Remove the x'es from all of them or most of them. I would remove all of them to start with, click OK. Reboot the system. When Windows starts up, it will open a small information with a check box. Click the box that says "Don't Run MSConfig" and then click OK. Play with the system to make sure everything still works. If anything does not work, click Start, Run and enter MSCONFIG. Then click Startup items and put some x'es in some of these boxes shown. Repeat until the system is running to your satisfaction.

Most systems come with an Antivirus program (Usually McAfee). It is only a 30 day trial version. There are free ones available (Google is your friend, use the search "free antivirus checkers", download one and install, or you could use the one that came on the system. Personally, I prefer Norton Antivirus from Symantec over McAfee but it is your choice and you absolutely need a virus checker. My sister bought a brand you cheap desktop computer (Knowing my sister, it was probably the cheapest desktop computer she could find, but that is another story.) She plugged it in, connected to the internet and had a virus within 30 minutes. She cancelled the internet and hasn't been back on in over 5 years.

After you have done all of this, using Google again, search for Spybot Search and Destroy. This is a free anti spyware program and is better than almost all of the ones you can buy. Install it and you are protected from spyware.

Mow that you have done all of this, your excellent desktop computer deal is even better. You have optimized it, protected it from viruses and spyware. You are ready to surf! Kowabunga Duuude!

Spring Cleaning Time On Your Cheap Desktop Computer

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Monday 25 May 2009 7:54 pm

Is your old cheap desktop computer showing its age? Is it filling up with old files or slowing down, cluttered with applications? Your home isn't the only thing that needs a good cleaning every once in awhile. Just like your house, your computer may just need a good spring-cleaning. Lucky for you, there are a few simple steps you can take and some utilities you can use to clean up the debris that may be cluttering up and slowing your machine down. Here's part 1 of a cleaning guide. Part 2—will be posted later. I still have some touching up to do with it.

First off, you should decide just how thorough you want to be. If you have a basement, it could potentially take hours to clean. but probably there are other things to do with your time. So if your hard drive is filled to bursting, spend some time backing up and clearing off your data files. Otherwise, though, your time is better spent on other chores.

There are two exceptions to this rule: the desktop and the Start menu. If you've been letting your desktop fill up, you can take about 10 minutes to file away or delete most of the clutter. If you are Windows XP user and need to ease navigation in the Start menu, open the menu in Windows Explorer The path for Explorer is: (C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs) and spend a couple of minutes filing. Since Vista users have the convenient Start menu search field, straightening up the Programs menu seems like a waste of time.

UNCLOG THE PIPES
About the easiest thing you can undertake to help out the performance of your machine is to defragment the hard drive. I make it a point to do this about once every couple of months. I start it at bedtime and it is finished the next morning. I don't normally recommend leaving a PC on overnight but make an exception inthis case. Test results show that defragging achieves uneven improvement but any improvement is good. Since you have a disk defragmenting utility built right into Windows, there's no reason not to run it. To run this, right-click on the hard drive icon in Windows Explorer and choose the Defragment option under Tools. Your computer may need to reboot to complete the work, so give yourself some time to run the utility. Defragmenting reassembles and rearranges files that have become scattered across the drive, ensuring that your computer can get to each file as quickly as possible. I did this action on my wife's cheap desktop computer and it helped so much she is now convinced I am a genius!

Review of The NEC P221W Multi Sync Monitor

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Monitors, Cheap LCD Desktop Monitors | Sunday 24 May 2009 4:19 pm

NEC P221W Review
NEC has made top quality monitors such as the NEC P221W for many years. I have always found them to be very good, but also very pricey. The NEC P221W has a screen designed for artists and photographers, therefore, it includes many features to ensure accurate color representation and an impressively wide viewing angle, (178-degree viewing angle). Its boasts of an internal 10-bit programmable lookup table, which stores correspondences between the input signal and the signal that must be sent to the matrix to achieve the necessary color, allow the display of 16.7 million colors. And, according to NEC, it achieves a very high 96 percent coverage of Adobe RGB. It is definitely not a cheap LCD monitor.

Controls for the screen include a power button, a blue power-on indicator light, a dedicated button for the selection of input, Menu, and two sets of arrow buttons, one left and right and one each up and down.

And NEC is doing more than bragging with these specs. In DisplayMate testing, the P221W excelled at every challenge thrown its way. In a White-Level Saturation test, it scored higher than any monitor have seen in a while, showing that it excels at displaying whites. It also displayed darker grays, blacks, and color with supreme accuracy, no surprise for a monitor of this price. It came as no surprise the ease of playing Doom 3 with this screen, considering how well it displays blacks and darker grays. The S-PVA matrix, though, means this display isn’t the best choice for fast-paced gaming due to an 8-millisecond pixel response time, it performed well on a DVD movie test using a currently available movie. You can find cheap desktop monitor screens in the market that offer faster pixel-response times, and I wouldn't recommend this screen specifically for viewing movies.

When you compare with other LCDs in this class, the P221W is an admirable performer. It displays the higher end of the gray scale better than the which has a comparably priced HP LP2275w, (although the LP2275w does offer four USB ports). For those looking for a screen of about this size and are not bothered about perfect color representation, I suggest the Asus VH222H. The Asus VH222H is a cheap LCD monitor that performs well, offers much more connectivity, and will cost you hundreds of dollars less than the $499 price tag.

Windows 7: Is Your Desktop Computer Ready?

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Saturday 23 May 2009 4:36 pm

The requirements for running Windows 7 have remained flat, with no increases from what was required for Vista. Actually, this Operating system works so much better and more fefficiently than does Vista, using the same hardware, it is hard to not call this a reduction in the hardware requirements.
The minimum systems specifications are:

1. Processor = 1 GHz

2. RAM = 1 GB 32 bit/2GB 64 bit

3. Disc Space = 16 GB 32 bit/20 GB 64 bit

4. Video = DirectX 9 capable device with WDDM 1.0 or higher

Microsoft does suggest a clean installation rather than an upgrade.
That's it, Surprised? Do keep in mind, these are minimum requirements. Minimum requirements do not mean maximum performance and pleasure. When you compare these specifications to what's available and fast becoming the norm, it is hard to imagine a wonderful experience with these specs regardless of the OS being used. You do realize I'm a hardware geek and like to stay on the cutting edge. I have always been an "early adapter" up to Vista hate to put up with slow performance. (This is what your cheap desktop computer gives as soon as anything faster hits the market.

I would like to try it on my wife's desktop but the last time I did something like that, it was months before the complaining stopped. The other good news is comes from those who have tried using Win7 on a system with close to the minimal specifications give surprisingly good reports. Some have even tried it on their Netbooks using the Atom processors but report limited success. The "limited" part refers more to the lack of the Intel Virtualization Technology on Atom Processors. I suspect many of the cheapest desktop computers might have problems with this system unless Microsoft is preparing a lite version.

A possible negative arises when you look at the increased specifications when running in XP mode. Designed mostly as a fop to businesses, running in XP Mode does require that your computer support Intel Virtualization Technology. Most of the current laptops don't have this technology. The units without Intel Visualization technology includes those with the Intel Celeron, Pentium Dual-Core, Pentium M, and Atom Processors. Just be careful not to confuse Pentium Dual-Core with Intel Core2. The situation is somewhat better for AMD users. Most of the AMD processors will support XP mode with the AMD Sempron being the exception.

The capability to run Windows 7 with this hardware does not go away with these processors, it means you won't be able to run Windows 7 in XP mode. XP Mode is important for a limited number of applications and won't be a big deal for most home users. My homebuilt system is not anything close to the minimum specs, so those few times that programs like WordPress need XP Mode, it's kicked in with no problems or prompts. This could be a stumbling block for many of the business laptop users. My son's Dell laptop will encounter this situation.
Just for those of you who are gamers, be aware that Windows 7 XP mode is not designed to work with Video Games.

It seems that Microsoft is getting a lot of things right with this release. You don't suppose they have actually started to listen and consider us users? Nah...I doubt it. I smell the influence of Linux on these decisions.

A Cheap Desktop Computer Review: eMachines EL1300G

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Saturday 23 May 2009 4:19 pm

eMachines has been known as a low cost producer of cheap desktop computers since it entered the PC market. eMachines recently introduced a new line of compact cheap desktop computers. This line, known as the EL1300G Series currently has two models available now starting at $298. Both models sport a more modern glossy-white finish, silver trim, topped off with glowing green LEDs.

The EL1300G-01w priced at $298, includes a 1.6GHz AMD Athlon 2650e processor, with 2GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive, and the Nvidia GeForce 6150SE integrated graphics. It is also equipped with a DVD writer and the beleagured Windows Vista Home Basic. It does not come bundled with a monitor, but there is an 18.5-inch (1366 by 768 resolution) eMachines E182H wm monitor, also in matching white. This monitor is available separately for $119.

The $398 EL1300G-02w has similar specifications, but it ships with a 20-inch widescreen LCD. Unfortunately, it is poorly equipped with just 1GB of RAM to power its Windows XP Home installation.

AMD is attempting to take on the Intel Atom processor with the 2650e, so it'll be interesting to see how the EL1300G series performs when matched against similarly priced Atom-powered compact PCs, such as the new $320 MSI Wind Nettop and $350 Asus Eee Box.

In case you haven't been keeping score, eMachines was acquired by Gateway in 2004. Gateway was in turn swallowed by Acer in 2007. The three brand combination has recently introduced more than 20 new netbooks, notebooks, and all-in-one PCs. You can expect to see them in the market place sometime during the next few months.

In the lower rungs of the cheapest desktop computers, life is a matter of eat or be eaten. The public can only be winners in this situation.

eMachine 1210-11 Review

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Saturday 23 May 2009 4:05 pm

The eMachines EL1210-11 is a cheap desktop computer with a small form factor. The EL1210-11 is based around the resurrected and revamped AMD Athlon X2 series processors. This processor is fairly old and is being given a rebirth as a low cost, energy efficient processor. In terms of today's low end processors, its performance is significantly lower but still is far and away better than Intel's Atom processors found in most of the nettop systems. This givse the EL1210-11 an odd position in the cheapest desktop computer world. It is a good system if you are looking at basic computing such as Internet, productivity and very basic multimedia use. Desktop video or gaming is pretty much out of the question with this unit.

The hard drive, a 160GB drive is a choice that is hard to understand. With a 160GB capacity. This size drive is extremely small in terms of storage and is generally found in a low cost nettop systems. It will provide very limited space for applications and data, and forget multimedia. At least this cheap desktop computer comes with a dual layer DVD burner and multi-card reader for your flash memory cards. One surprise feature though is the manufacturer's inclusion of an eSATA port on the back. The eSATA port can be used with high speed external storage. This actually is somewhat of a recovery, making up somewhat for the very small hard drive.

Graphics are a mixed bag on the EL1210-11. The system uses a newer GeForce 8200 integrated graphics solution, offering a bit higher 3D performance, but it is still lacking enough power for any real 3D gaming usage. There is a PCI-Express c16 graphics slot inside the machine, but with the limited space inside, a low wattage power supply, the ability to put such a card inside is severely limited.

When you consider the combination of components, the EL1210-11 is a system that is out of place and looking for a home. It will satisfy the basic needs such as surfing the web, word processing but any buyer must consider and accept the limitations. The least expensive desktop computer deal is not always the best choice. The buyer must understand and accept the limitations if he/she is going to be happy with the purchase of the EL1210-11.

Review Of The Shuttle X50 All-In-One Computer

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Saturday 23 May 2009 3:52 pm

The Shuttle's X50 is an all-in-one PC with a 15.6-inch, 1366-by-768-resolution LCD touchscreen. This screen is the same size as its direct rival, the $600 Asus Eee Top 1602. The specifications come very close to being identical with the ASUS Eeee Top 1602. The Eee Top 1602 (as well as Asus's Eee Box mini desktop) both use the older single-core 1.6GHz N270 Atom CPU, while the Shuttle X50 proudly sports Intel's newer dual-core 1.6GHz Atom 330 processor. This new 8-watt chip features a 1MB cache, in contrast to the smaller 512KB cache on Intel's Atom 230 processor.

The X50 only comes with a single 1GB module of DDR2 memory but there is a potential upgrade to a maximum of 2GB. The system holds a woefully small 160GB Western Digital Scorpio hard drive running at 5400 rpm. You could have a lot more capacity in a machine of this size

Even with the faster CPU, the X50 performed identically to the Eee Top 1602 in a standard applications benchmark, WorldBench 6. Both machines came up with a like score of 41. This may be at the upper end of netbook performances but is very near one half the speed of similarly priced cheap desktop PCs. If you want performance more comparable to that of a cheap desktop computer, you'll need to look at the much pricier (and certainly less portable) models such as the $1999 Sony VAIO VGC-LV180J or the $2100 HP TouchSmart IQ816 (prices as of 4/27/09). The X50's price tag is $600 with Windows XP and $500 with Linux.

At that price, you will not get additional touchscreen functionality: The X50 also doesn't have any customized programs or fancy interface tweaks for the touchscreen capabilities to take advantage of. There is a calibration program to play around with, you could not call that innovative or fun.

The integrated graphics package couldn't run a single one of the gaming benchmarks I normally use at what would be called a playable rate. That includes current-generation titles such as Unreal Tournament 3, way back to less graphically intensive selections such Far Cry. You would not normally expect many people would buy this system for gaming purposes.

Shuttle is hawking the portability of this system as its main draw, since the X50 is equipped with a stand that is also a carrying handle for easy transport. Shuttle should have put as much insight into the rest of the PC's design as they did with this portion of the system. Connectivity is average, with a total of six USB ports, one gigabit ethernet port, a DVI connection, and a four-in-one media card reader.

The design of the PC is attractive on the front, with a bright, blue bar of light that shoots out of the X50's bottom. The system is propped up in the rear with a single bar that can be adjusted to modify the display angle. An included stylus is hidden near the system's power button, at the upper left. The power button was bumped several times when reaching for the stylus, causing the system to be shut down each time.

The included manual makes no mention on how you would go about upgrading the ram and hard drive as indicated in the specifications. The last thing you would want to do with an all-in-one PC is to start removing screws and pieces willy-nilly. Shuttle made a huge error with this lack of upgrade capability.
I cannot comment on any included input devices, since the X50 configuration I saw didn't come with a mouse or keyboard. Not to worry though,Shuttle has promised that it will have an optional mouse and keyboard addition on its Web site, should you order the PC from there.
one conclusion that can be made seems to be that Shuttle's X50 is a netbook concealed within a 15.6-inch desktop monitor. The Eee Top 1602 is going to provide stiff competition, and for those looking for the cheapest desktop computer, the omission of an optical drive, the slower system performance, and the graphical jitters will probably turn out to be a bitter pill too big to swallow. That leaves portability as the X50's key selling point, and frankly, I'd much rather carry around my Gateway laptop than pseudo portable with a 15.6-inch screen. With a little judicious research, you can come up with a much better desktop computer deal than the Shuttle X50.

Planning To Buy A Cheap Desktop Computer Part 1

Posted by | Cheap Desktop Computers | Saturday 23 May 2009 3:39 pm

In today's market place, everyone is looking for the best price available on the item they are planning to buy. The same thing holds true for those shopping for the cheapest desktop computer available. It is quite possible you can find an excellent price in a retail chain and this would include their best desktop computers. It is also quite possible you might find the ideal solution right here on our pages. We certainly have a wider selection and we have the cheapest desktop computers new or used. If you are looking for a cheap computer desktop, there are a few things you should consider before purchasing the cheapest desktop computer.

Four of these items for coonsideration are the computer's memory, the power supply, the monitor, and of course the CPU. These are the most important components of a computer, so it behooves you to make sure they are of top quality even though you are only shopping for a cheap desktop computer.

There are two forms of memory to consider on a computer. One is in the form of RAM which is an acronym for random access memory. This is the memory that is used by the computer as it is doing everyday processes. The other form of memory is the hard drive. The hard drive is where you store all of your files, pictures, and software programs associated with your computer. If you are going to purchase a cheap desktop computer , be sure that you have enough RAM to run all of your programs and that you have enough memory on your hard drive to store all of the files, pictures, and programs that you will need. Neither of these two components will add much to the cost of the computer. Keep in mind that additional memory is the least expensive way to speed up a computer.
